Where can I sell petrified wood? How much can I sell it for?
Our backyard is filled with tons and tons of petrified wood and indian tools. The colors range from white striped, red, black, brown, and some are even clearish purple. The pieces are not very big nor do they weigh very mcuh. The largest is probly 16 inches by 9 inches. It ways probably 10 pounds.
If I collected all the ones I could there would probably be about 50 pounds total.
How would I be able to sell these for as well as where?
Petrified wood means that it was buried in sediments and groundwater replaced the wood cells with minerals. This usually takes a million or so years. The fact that you have indian artifacts buried with the the wood suggests one of them is out of place. The earliest known human artifacts in North America (I assume you are in NA) is some 12,000 to 20,000 years old and too young to support a conclusion of contemporaneous petrified wood.
However, assuming it is petrified find out about the original tree type and the rock formation and age it is buried in. That kind of information, known as provenance of the sample would be valuable to a collector (just like in art collecting).
Lastly, I once sold a 10-pound piece of coral fossil from the Mississippian Period (about 300 million years old) in a Garage Sale for 10 bucks.
