Taxidermy Tyrannosaurus Rex?
Some time ago, I purchased a fake "taxidermy" Tyrannosaurus Rex head. It comes about 3 feet out of the wall and weighs about 50 lbs (give or take). There are 2 holes in the back, which I assume are for mounting.
I want to mount it in my basement, but I'm not exactly sure if there's a "wrong way" to mount something like this. My original plans were to do one of the following:
A) Use generic nails or screws with wide radius tops to hang it directly from the wall.
B) Drill into my masonry in the basement and do the same thing, except with anchored masonry screws.
Am I going overboard or not? I've put dozens of frames on walls and installed a collection of shelves, but I wasn't sure if it was any different with something like this.
Thanks!
Because it extends 3 feet from the wall, the mounting fasteners will be under tension (i.e. pulling outward), whereas frame fasteners are generally under "shear" force (pulling downward).
If you're mounting on a concrete wall, you have no choice but to use masonry anchors. Unless there's a stud wall, in which case you can use lag screws and washers to prevent the heads from slipping through the holes, or if you are a little less concerned that someone might bump the item and knock it down, you might use some big giant "L" hooks - ones that have about a #12 or larger screw thread should hold > 50 lbs.
